Couple of weeks ago, I visited the New-Valamo in Heinävesi, Finland. These 200 monks left Russia during the war because of severe difficulties. You can visit their site at Check the English page on the left side otherwise you may get the Finnish page.

Last week I heard a group from Valaam who were travelling through Finland and who sang just like the above video. So beautiful and though I did not understand the Russian or Greek words, the harmony and style was trememdous.

I hope to back to Valamo and do some volunteer work. Blessings to all.

Where is the Valaam Monastery, and does the name refer to the man in the OT with the refractory donkey?

Valaam Monastery is on the border of Russia and Finland. I do not believe it has any bearing to the name Barlaam.

    Fr. Stephen,

Thank you so much for sharing this. The lyric beauty of the chant so closely matches the words (thank you also for the english in the video montage) and the images.
